WEEKLY THOUGHTS:

Whereas civil-rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as military forces, which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.

Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments

to the Federal Constitution  [June 18, 1789]

Freedom Is Responsibility

Freedom breeds responsibility. Freedom teaches responsibility. Freedom is responsibility. Just like many living animals, civilized man has learned over tens of thousands of years that life is better when one is not always at odds or at war with one’s neighbor. The difference between peace and war always hinges on whether one party is encroaching on the Freedom of another party. Consider, for an example, that complete Freedom is the "status quo" that every one enjoys as each one pursues his or her goals of work, play or relaxation in life. Consider that he or she is achieving the goals without doing any harm to any one else. Now, another party (or bully, or unhappy party) comes along and does not like the way the first party, always so contented and happy in life, especially when the first party enjoys going to ball games on Sundays, when everyone should be in church. The unhappy party is so religious that it really grates on him, so he considers the options of how to stop this blasphemous activity. Since he alone cannot enforce his principles on the other party, he decides to get a group of like minded people together to help him. In their community the majority of the people are church going people so they agree to vote in a law that there can be no ball games on Sunday. But this has been a peaceful community and there are no laws until this one. So, now, the "status quo" has been upset. Whether trying to do good or trying to do bad, when you lose the FOCUS ON FREEDOM, Freedom loses. In trying to do what they feel is good the religious people of the community have done harm to the many people (the minority) who want to go to the games, and in addition the balance of Freedom in the community has been upset by the aggressive action. In bringing this harm the majority of the people feel they have done some good and do not accept the responsibility of the harm they have done. No snowflake in an avalanche feels responsible.

This is the beginning of the end of Freedom in the community. And, it has been accomplished in a democratic way. The door has been opened and is extremely difficult to close because of the many ideas people have to make the community or the world a better place, in their opinion. All of this takes place daily in America because of the people neither being held responsible nor feeling responsible for their harmful actions. There are always unintended consequences from every action. The victims of the action are not likely to accept this restriction and may soon come up with some harmful action of their own. It’s all downhill from here. And this peaceful community is no longer peaceful because of the loss of the FOCUS ON FREEDOM. Before taking any action against anyone, and to maintain Freedom one must consider the harm and the unseen consequences that one does to others. That consideration has been rationalized and ignored when the majority votes tyranny on the minority. Irresponsibility has overtaken responsibility. This is against the entire spirit of the Constitution. It will take the FOCUS ON FREEDOM by the majority of citizens to repeal laws and regain Freedom.
