WEEKLY THOUGHTS:

FREEDOM

In a free society the only sovereignty that makes sense and is legitimate is the sovereignty of each individual to pursue his or her economic and personal choices --- provided the equal rights of others are not violated.

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE-REVISITED

After celebrating the 234th Fourth of July anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence from England one dwells on the meaning of that event for not only the fortunate who lived in America but also the meaning to the entire world. No other people had achieved such a trust of themselves and their neighbors, to govern themselves as individuals. There has always been a strong individual who gained control of the people through charisma or militarily, or both. In America's case there was no single strong individual who pulled the people together to fight for their independence from despotism. The founders were made up of many strong willed individuals without a leader but with strong ideals and principles that they should govern themselves. With neither political party nor leaders this group of men fashioned the greatest document and greatest improvement to mankind that the world had seen before or since. Freedom to do as one pleases and to control all aspects of one's life has always been the dream of all mankind but had never before been achieved.

With the Freedom came the full responsibility for not only his or her life but also to be aware that the Freedom of other people is equally as important, whether family, friend or stranger. Although it may not have been the battle cry, "when all are not free, none are free" is a phrase that the colonists must have realized that Freedom for all would bring lasting Freedom for each of them. It is a shame that their realization has not lasted to the current times. The result of which has been the loss of Freedom for all Americans.

When one hears the Declaration of Independence read with emphasis on the principles that caused the people of America to rebel against tyranny, one cannot help but see the similarity between then and now. The words that Jefferson chose made the picture of tyranny show clearly to the colonists. Even after much of what he wrote was changed or omitted (including the condemnation of the evil slavery) by the input of the others in the congress, the spirit of the document was not lost and remains to this day the standard by which American Freedom is weighed. Reading it or hearing it shows clearly how far America has strayed from the founding. It is a mystery how one can listen to the words and then go to the voting booth and trash the entire meaning of the Document. Many of the accusations toward King George and Parliament can easily be made today toward the current president and the congress. The comparison of the evils and usurpations jump right off of the page. There is no longer the principle of Freedom for All. It has degenerated to taking from this group to give to that group in order to buy the votes the Congressman needs to be re-elected. It is criminal and unworthy of Freedom loving people to allow themselves to be manipulated so easily, and at the expense of their fellow Americans. The FOCUS ON FREEDOM has been lost completely. Until it is regained America will continue it's downward path toward the soft enslavement that brought on the Revolution. Only the Black population knows the evil of full enslavement, yet they have been voting for their re-enslavement since the late 1930's. Along with the Blacks, enough of the whites have joined them in their path to slavery, through the politicians use of the many issues that are used to cloud clear thinking, in order to be re-elected and retain power.

The Tea Party Movement, in its simplicity of maintaining the FOCUS ON FREEDOM, is the greatest opportunity to regain the Freedom that has been lost. The current administration and congressional majority has made it very clear that the Freedom of Americans is not even on the list of goals. The past 18 months shows the opposite. As the Movement grows to thirty or forty million America can again lead the world in the FOCUS ON FREEDOM for all.

At this time of year it would be a good idea for every American to read the Declaration out loud to family and friends to get a feel of the real sense of Freedom. When the many issues of the day come up and are discussed on the radio and in friendly groups it would be wise to re-read or at least think of the Declaration's meaning and intent for Freedom from government. The spirit and strength of America lies is Freedom for all. It needs to be nurtured.
