WEEKLY THOUGHTS:

"The natural progress of things is for LIBERTY to yield

 and government

 to gain ground."

-Thomas Jefferson

THE TEA PARTY OF DECEMBER 16, 1773

The original Tea Party of 16 December 1773 was the definitive move toward the independence of the United States of America from England, the most powerful country, and the most powerful Navy in the world at that time.  The Tea Party was not just a tax protest against a tea tax but it was a protest against the tyranny of the Parliament and King George of England.  The Parliament was exercising its power over the Colonies of America, ignoring the pleas that the Colonies should make their own decisions rather than be forced to obey the laws of Parliament.  Meetings of colonist representatives were being held in Boston to protest the landing of a shipment of tea and the refusal of the Colonists to pay any tea tax.  The town was plastered with posters with the message, "Friends! Brethren! Countrymen! The hour of Destruction or Manly Opposition to the Machinations of Tyranny stares you in the Face.."  Samuel Adams made a motion, unanimously adopted by the meeting, "that the tea should not be landed; that it should be sent back in the same bottom to the place whence it came, at all events, and that no duty should be paid on it."  The next morning the sheriff gave an order to disband.  Sam Adams gave a fifteen or twenty minute speech in which he said, "a free and sensible people, when they felt themselves injured would always and had a right to meet together and consult for their own safety--that he thought that Meeting so far from being riotous, that they were as regular and orderly as any People whatsoever."  Lest the meeting be forcibly broken up Sam Adams observed that he kept a firearm "in order and at his bedside, as every good citizen ought," and "should not hesitate to use it."  In a later meeting a report from the Governor would not allow the ships to leave Boston without unloading the tea.  To this Sam Adams announced, "This meeting can do nothing more to save the country!"  That was the signal for the commencement of the Boston Tea Party.  Within a matter or hours Patriots, disguised as Indians had swarmed aboard the ships and emptied 342 chests of tea into Massachusetts Bay, being careful not to cause any harm to any person or equipment or the ships.

Immediately Sam Adams communicated the event through the Committee of Correspondence to towns in Massachusetts, and to Philadelphia, and to New York.  He reported the destruction of the tea took place without the least Injury to the Vessels or any other property.  Property rights were one of Adams's main arguments against taxation by the British so it was important to put this point clearly before all who read the report.  The revolution had begun.

It is this same demand for liberty by Sam Adams and the patriots that the Tea Parties of today are pursuing, except this time it is Freedom from the abusive Federal Government of the United States.  The President and Congress are disingenuous in their descriptions of the Tea Party people as was the Governor of the Colonists.  Their mind set is for total control over our lives by the government.  It must be stopped just as it was stopped in the first revolution.  Anything short of complete Freedom from the people in Washington will only delay their next attack on our Freedom.  Once the catalyst of the tea tax ignited the cause of liberty the complete FOCUS ON FREEDOM came into play, dropping other issues and focusing on succeeding in driving America away from the subjugation of England.  May the current Tea Parties be as successful by dropping other issues and by the strength of millions of additional individuals joining in the fight for Freedom and driving Americans away from the subjugation of government people.  Let the Tea Parties grow with neither leaders nor party affiliations.  In America the individual is sovereign.  FOCUS ON FREEDOM of the individual.  It's patriotic and its Constitutional.
